Welcome to Bluebox

Penn State's Experimental Research Classrooms

Cutting-edge digital displays, interactive technologies, and moveable furniture join together in experimental classrooms at Penn State where innovation and excellence meet. 101 Althouse, aka the Bluebox, was the University’s first experimental space.

Getting Started

Classroom structures dictate what pedagogies can and cannot occur easily. The Bluebox boasts cutting-edge digital displays, interactive technologies, movable furniture to support a wide variety of configurations, and whiteboard walls to encourage students’ ideation and problem-solving.

Research

The Bluebox has served as an experimental learning space that supports a unique research-to-practice cycle. Faculty have the tools, furniture, instructional technologies, and space to freely implement unique pedagogical approaches to all of their classroom questions, both big and small.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions and answers for those that currently use the room.

I taught in Althouse, including the room that became the Bluebox, for over 40 years. Teaching in this space is so enjoyable it almost made me reconsider retirement.
